The Proposal, with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, was a fairly typical romantic comedy. Although both Bullock and Reynolds did a great job with the characters, the plot is somewhat overused.
Girl and boy aren't interested in each other, situations move them together and girl and boy get married. While this movie was rather predictable, it still had me laughing quite a bit.
Bullock (of recent Blindside fame) is an actress who seems to easily move into totally different genres and it is clear that comedy is one of her first loves as an actor. She portrays her character well and makes it easy for her audience to identify with her.
After finding out she is to be deported back to Canada, Bullock must find a way to remain in the U.S. so she makes a deal with her younger assistant (Reynolds) to marry her. They plan on a quiet wedding and a quickie divorce immediately after. Before the wedding Reynolds returns to his hometown in Alaska with his bride-to-be. In trying to keep the reason for their marriage hidden from his small-town family, a series of hilarious events occur that cause them to fall in love.
It’s a cute situation comedy you can watch with the entire family. Even with an overused plot, the movie was thoroughly entertaining and endearing. With this direct tv movie I found myself truly enjoying the characters and the beautiful scenery of Alaska.
My final thoughts on the movie are that, although somewhat predictable, it is sure to bring a smile to your face along with a few good laughs.
